How we rate

Safety limits and label data come first. The least favourable applicable rule determines the verdict. Missing data limits the result.

Protein bar

One red portion value: not useful. A yellow value, collagen as main protein or palm fat: so-so. Polyols above the middle limit warn in yellow, not red.

  • Calories: green ≤ 200 kcal, yellow ≤ 300 kcal, otherwise red.
  • Protein: green ≥ 15 g, yellow ≥ 8 g, otherwise red.
  • Sugar: green ≤ 5 g, yellow ≤ 12 g, otherwise red.
  • Sugar alcohols: green ≤ 5 g, yellow ≤ 10 g, otherwise red.
  • Fat: green ≤ 10 g, yellow ≤ 15 g, otherwise red.
  • saturated fat: green ≤ 3 g, yellow ≤ 6 g, otherwise red.
  • Fibre: green ≥ 5 g, yellow ≥ 2 g, otherwise red.

Daily amount, NRV, personal requirement according to DGE, BfR and EFSA

Above EFSA: not useful. Above BfR, below the personal requirement according to DGE or a yellow rule: so-so. Main substance and form count. Safety exceedances for all substances always count.

NRV: 15 % · Personal requirement according to DGE: 100 %.

Food

Bars count per fixed label portion. Other foods: FSA per 100 g. Two red FSA values: not useful, one: so-so. Protein and fibre follow EU rules.

  • Fat: 3 g / 17.5 g
  • saturated fat: 1.5 g / 5 g
  • Sugar: 5 g / 22.5 g
  • Salt: 0.3 g / 1.5 g

Protein: 12 / 20 % kcal · Fibre: 3 / 6 g.

My rules

zucker_in_nem: Sugar does not belong in a food supplement

suessstoff: Contains sweetener

zuckeralkohol: Sugar alcohols may have a laxative effect

Magnesium oxide: Poorly bioavailable form of magnesium

Zinc oxide: Poorly bioavailable form of zinc

Ethyl ester: Omega-3 as ethyl ester rather than triglyceride

Titanium dioxide|E171: Titanium dioxide (E171) is no longer authorised as a food additive in the EU

aminosaeure_spiking: Individual amino acids can inflate the protein value

hauptwirkstoff_unter15: Main active ingredient below 15 % NRV, barely an effective dose

ashwagandha|withania|ksm-66: The Federal Institute for Risk Assessment identifies health risks, including risks to the liver. Do not use during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or with liver disease. Use caution with thyroid medication. Banned in Denmark.

tryptophan: Do not take with antidepressants or other substances that affect serotonin without consulting a doctor.

Product comparison

Only values available for every product count. The first criterion carries the most points, with one point less for each subsequent criterion. The best value receives the points. If all values are equal, that criterion awards no points.

More points win. Products rated not useful come after assessable products with a higher verdict. Equal points mean no clear difference.
