In short
Creatine is a substance your body makes itself and that is found in meat and fish. It is mainly stored in the muscles and helps to provide energy quickly during short, intense efforts.
What does the body need it for?
In adults aged 55 and over who do regular strength training, creatine increases the effect of the training on muscle strength. This needs 3 g of creatine a day, together with strength training on at least 3 days a week. Creatine increases physical performance in successive bursts of short, very intense exercise (from 3 g a day).
Where is it found?
Mainly in meat and fish. Hardly any in plant foods.
Too much
With kidney disease, take creatine only after talking to your doctor. Creatine can raise the creatinine level in the blood; tell your practice before blood tests.
